Althea Gibson's Wimbledon
For the 4th installment of the CASH MACHINE x Alias Books East 1 piece 1 wall series, Molly Schiot will unveil Althea Gibson's Wimbledon.
Molly Schiot is a director and artist who lives in Los Angeles. She is currently the author of a book called GAMECHANGERS, the unsung heroines of sports history, which is a celebration of the pioneering, forgotten female athletes of the twentieth century, that comes out this fall. The idea to collect stories and share them started when she pitched potential documentaries about women athletes to a major sports network. Those stories fell on deaf ears. She took the failed pitches and started an Instagram account called @theunsungheroines and shared one of these stories daily. Stories about women disqualified from tennis tournaments because of the color of their skin. Women who changed their physical appearances to pass as men so they could stand up to bat and hit balls into the outfield. The first black woman to win a gold medal who returned home and was congratulated publicly by the white mayor, but would not shake her hand, because “That’s just the way it was at that time.” Now she is doing everything in her reach to get these stories told.
In addition to unveiling this piece, Molly will be selecting her top 5 book picks at Alias on Friday the 22nd from 7 - 9 pm. Please join us!
